CRUISE Q&A: Young At Sea Claim Cruising Can Be For Everyone Regardless Of Age

24/10/2025

Cruising is something often associated with old people, but Josh and Alfie, are trying to change that! The young couple, from the United Kingdom, set up Young At Sea and embarked on their first cruise in August 2024.

Since then Josh and Alfie have been on many more cruises, sailing with a range of cruise lines, including Ambassador Cruise Line, Cunard, Fred. Olsen Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line. We caught up with them to find and more about their highs and lows so far!

Can you give us a brief introduction to Young At Sea?

Young At Sea is our cruise YouTube channel focused on showing people that cruising can be for everyone regardless of age. We want to remove the stereotypes of cruising and show that anyone can enjoy a cruise. We are Josh and Alfie, a couple based in the north of the UK and since our first cruise together, we have tried various different ships and cruise lines to see what is special about each one and to discover the world by ship.

What made you guys decide to do your first cruise

Josh has always been a fan of ships. His obsession began when he was 3 and his 10th word was Titanic. Since then, his love for ships and ocean liners grew and grew. It was when Cunard Line announced their new ship, Queen Anne, that he was interested in the idea of cruising. We followed her journey from her construction, her maiden voyage, being part of her naming ceremony and finally her first 4-night voyage to Rotterdam in August 2024. Since then our love for cruising has grown tremendously and our love for cruising hasn’t stopped.

What did you love about it so much

For many people, cruising is about the destination but for us, it is about the ship. Exploring the different venues, trying different cuisines and the level of service is unlike anything you’ll find on land. The feeling of stepping on board your home for the next few nights is unlike any other type of holiday. It is like the old Cunard saying, “Getting there is half the fun!”. Being on board a ship allows us to fully relax and escape from the chaos of everyday life. Nothing is more relaxing than watching the ocean in front of you and the gentle sound of the waves.

Which cruise has been your best so far?

For us, the most memorable and magical cruise was our 7-night Disney Fantasy cruise to the British Isles. First of all, we didn’t end up going to the UK due to adverse weather conditions and we actually ended up in Norway. It was our first time visiting the country and it ended with us kayaking in Olden! On board the experience was unlike any other cruise before it. Rotational dining was a highlight for us, getting to try 3 unique restaurants every evening with the dining becoming the entertainment, reminiscent of past ocean liners. The entertainment was remarkable and the final theatre show left us both an emotional mess. Disney Cruise Line has that nostalgia and magic which other cruise lines can’t recreate.

Have you had any bad experiences?

The only bad experiences we have had on a cruise ship have been during our 2-night voyage on Ambassador Ambition. There were long queues for food, our toilet had black mould and on disembarkation day we had to leave our cabins at 7:30 but weren’t allowed to disembark until noon. For the price we paid for the cruise, we weren’t expecting a luxury cruise but the short voyage left us feeling quite disappointed and unlikely to try Ambition again in the future. We have heard that longer voyages are much more entertaining and don’t have the same issues which we experienced but, for us, a 2-night cruise shouldn't be completely different to a longer voyage.

Do you have a favourite ship and destination?

For us, Queen Anne will always have a soft spot in our hearts. She was our first ever cruise ship and the ship we hope to get married on in the future. Whilst she divides opinions, we think she is the perfect fit in the Cunard fleet. Our answer to our favourite ship changes every time we try a new one. We don’t have a favourite because it depends on the type of cruise we are looking for. For something more relaxed, we would choose Cunard or Fred Olsen but if we want to go all out and have fun, our favourite would be a Celebrity or MSC ship. In terms of destinations, we still have a lot of the world to explore. So far, our top two ports we have visited would be Lisbon and Olden. Lisbon for its man-made beauty and architecture and Olden for its stunning scenery.

Is there a new ship you guys are most excited about?

We are yet to try Princess Cruises. We are booked on board Sky Princess and we are really excited to see what she has to offer. Princess Cruises are very different to other cruise lines we have tried with their medallion technology. We can’t wait to try out our medallion and explore the different venues on the ship. As coffee lovers, we are looking forward to the 24/7 international café, especially when we are filming our ship tour in the early hours and want to grab a quick bite in between filming for our channel.

What advise would you give to a newbie cruiser?

If you are new to cruising, our number one bit of advice would be to prepare your bank account. Once you have been on one cruise, the only solution to the cruise blues is to have another booked. Cruises are unlike any sort of land based holiday and often can be a much cheaper alternative to flying to different countries. We thought we would be very sensitive to the motion of the ocean before our first cruise but being on a huge cruise ship is more stable than you might think. Half the time, you don’t even realise that you are on a ship especially after spending a few nights on board.

What is your favourite thing about cruising?

Our favourite thing about cruising is the feeling of stepping on board for the first time, knowing that all of the troubles of modern life are far behind you and you have the next several days where the only thing to worry about is what time you are having your dinner. Other than that, our favourite thing about cruising is the people you meet, whether that is the crew or the other passengers who become lifelong friends. We have made so many wonderful friends through our cruising adventures and we hope to make many more in the future.

What are the plans for the future for Young At Sea?

Our future plans for Young At Sea are to continue cruising! We hope to try lots of new cruise lines and ships in the future. We really want to try Virgin Voyages, Marella, Holland America and Norwegian cruise line so expect to see them coming to our YouTube channel in the future. We love going back to our favourite ships but trying something different, whether it’s a different itinerary or different activities on board. We like to make every cruise something unique and memorable to share with our audience.
