Ambassador Cruise Line is expanding into Germany with the acquisition of Oceania Cruises’ Sirena, which will become the first ship for a new German cruise brand in 2028.
The 670-passenger ship has been purchased from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and will continue operating for Oceania Cruises until spring 2028 under a leaseback arrangement. After leaving the Oceania fleet, the ship will be renamed Ambella and introduced under Ambassador’s new Ambassador Kreuzfahrten brand.
Built in 2000 for Renaissance Cruises, the 30,200-ton ship is one of the smaller vessels in the wider cruise market. Its size is expected to play an important role in Ambassador’s plans for Germany, allowing Ambella to visit smaller ports that can be more difficult for today's largest cruise ships to access. The ship will operate an adults-only, German-speaking cruise experience, with Ambassador targeting German couples, experienced cruisers and river cruise passengers interested in trying ocean cruising.
Ambella is scheduled to begin its first season in May 2028, with cruises departing from Bremerhaven and Kiel. The initial programme is expected to include two repositioning cruises and 11 destination-focused itineraries between May and September, covering Northern Europe and the Baltic alongside selected voyages to Southern Europe. The launch represents a significant expansion for Ambassador, which currently operates in the UK and France. The company's British operation includes Ambience and Ambition, while the former Compagnie Française de Croisières business now operates under the Ambassador Croisière name. Germany will become the company's third major European market, with Ambassador Kreuzfahrten created specifically for German-speaking guests.
Ambella won't spend the entire year operating traditional cruises. Following its German summer season, the ship will be chartered to the Institute for Shipboard Education, the organisation behind the Semester at Sea programme. Under the new partnership, Ambella will serve as a floating campus for students during the winter months. The first planned Semester at Sea deployment will run from September 2028 through April 2029, with the partnership initially expected to last ten years.
Semester at Sea allows university students to combine academic studies with international travel, living aboard a ship while visiting destinations around the world. More than 73,000 people have participated in the programme since it began in 1963. This arrangement means Ambella will effectively have two distinct roles: a German cruise ship during the European summer and a floating university campus for much of the remainder of the year. Cruisers won't see the Sirena name disappear from Oceania immediately. The ship will continue operating under the Oceania Cruises brand through spring 2028 before transferring to Ambassador. The sale was first announced earlier this year by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, although the identity of the buyer was not initially revealed. The ship originally entered service as R Four for Renaissance Cruises before later becoming part of the Princess Cruises fleet and eventually joining Oceania Cruises as Sirena.
