BBC Worldwide has officially announced a new global entertainment channel, BBC HD, which will be the first channel exclusively designed for cruise ship passengers.
The new channel will be offered to guests on P&O Cruises and Cunard Line ship, streaming in the cruise lines’ 115,000 cabins from this month. The channel will become available to the wider cruise industry at a later date.

The P&O Cruises cruise ship, Arcadia spent Christmas Day anchored off the Norfolk coast, near the coastal town of Lowestoft.
The 86,799 gross tonne Arcadia was on a nine-night cruise to the Baltic and was on route back to Southampton. Arcadia dropped anchor at around 07:30 on Christmas Day before setting sail again at 18:00 bound for Southampton. The P&O Cruises cruise ship, Oceana is to host a spectacular live BBC Radio 2 outside broadcast in Madeira with a performance from the Dutch jazz singer, Caro Emerald.
The singer will be performing two sets of her best-loved songs; in what will be the first ever list BBC performance on board a P&O Cruises ship. Presenter, Ana Matronic will introduce Caro Emerald. The broadcast will be live on BBC Radio 2 from 23:00. The short-lived social impact cruise line, Fathom, has announced it will stop cruise operations in 2017, just one year since it began cruises to Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
The cruise line, owned by parent company Carnival Corporation, started cruises in April 2016 and will end its cruise operations in summer 2017. The cruise line’s only ship, the 704-passenger Adonia will return to P&O Cruises. P&O Cruises has announced more details about its new LNG-powered ship which will be the largest cruise ship ever built for the British cruise market when it launches in 2020.
The 180,000 gross tonne ship will feature a stunning atrium area with glass walls spanning three decks, letting natural light flood in and offering spectacular views of the ocean. The atrium will also feature a grand staircase, gallery and impressive overhead walkways providing dramatic focal points. P&O Cruises have announced that it is to build a next-generation cruise ship which will be delivered in 2020. The new ship will be the largest cruise ship ever built specifically for the British cruise market.
Exceeding 180,000 gross tonnes the new mega cruise ship will accommodate 5,200 guests (lower berths). The ship will offer an extensive range of dining and entertainment venues. P&O Cruises’ 1995-built Oriana, which is the oldest ship in the fleet, is to undergo an extensive refurbishment.
The mid-sized ship will head to Hamburg at the end of November 2016 where the refurbishment will take place, which will see improvements to cabins and suites, restaurants, bars and lounges and other passenger amenities on board. P&O Cruises are working with leading cruise industry architects, Richmond who designed the interiors of their flagship Britannia, which launched in 2015. The most distinctive features will remain on board Oriana, but new modern carpets, lighting and furniture will be added. P&O Cruises’ mid-sized cruise ship, Oceana is to home port from the cruise port of Valletta in Malta during 2017 and 2018.
Edward Zammit Lewis, who is the Minister for Tourism in Malta said that the home porting of P&O Cruises’ Oceana in Malta “is exciting for the tourism sector” and that he looks forward to further developing a relationship with P&O Cruises. Over 100,000 passengers are expected to be handled through the fly and cruise program on Oceana during 2017. |
