Carnival Corporation has announced that is has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, for the construction of two new cruise ships.
Holland America Line is to receive a third 99,500 gross tonne Pinnacle-class ship which is expected to launch in 2021. The new ship will join Koningsdam which launched in 2016 and Nieuw Statendam which is due to launch in November 2018. The new 2,660-passenger cruise ship will be built at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard.

Princess Cruises’ latest new built cruise ship, Majestic Princess has successfully completed her sea trials off the coast of Italy.
The new 141,000 gross tonne cruise ship is the third in Princess Cruises’ Royal-class but unlike her sister ships, Royal Princess and Regal Princess, the newer Majestic Princess has been tailored for the Chinese cruise market. The popular UK television show ‘The Cruise’ is to return for a second series, with the first episode being broadcasted on ITV 1 on 12 January 2017 at 20:30. The new six-part series was produced by Wild Pictures for ITV and was filmed in the Mediterranean last summer on board 3,560-passenger cruise ship, Royal Princess, which is operated by Princess Cruises. In the first episode crew member Scott Grayson ensures that the 3,000 toilets on board the ship are kept in good working order, whilst an unhappy passenger at the reception is dealt with by crew member Timothy Gallant.
In other episodes the ship 1,400-crew race to turn the ship around and ensure it is ready to depart on time from Athens, whist a new officer on the bridge is put to the test by Captain Tony Draper. Princess Cruises is to revolutionise the cruise industry with a new gadget called an ‘Ocean Medallion’ which will replace the regular stateroom keycard.
The new wearable technology will enable guests to seamlessly open their stateroom doors and make purchases on board and is set to first debut on Regal Princess from November 2017, followed by Royal Princess and Caribbean Princess in 2018 and eventually the rest of the Princess Cruises fleet. The high-tech device will be laser-etched with the guest’s name, ship and cruise date and will be provided to all passengers at no cost. Inside each Ocean Medallion will be numerous communication technologies including Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). An invisible yet complex network of interactive, intelligent sensors and devices will be placed throughout each ship as well as home ports and a range of cruise destinations. The new Ocean Medallions will be in the form of a small disc, which can be accessorised with jewellery, wristbands or simply carried in a pocket. Princess Cruises has been fined $40 million after the cruise line pleaded guilty to several charges of polluting the sea and trying to cover it up.
The cruise line which is owned by parent company Carnival Corporation is being charged for illegally dumping oil contaminated waste from the Caribbean Princess. Princess Cruises has announced its largest ever UK cruise season operation for 2018, with three of its ships offering cruises from Southampton and Dover.
Five years after it was officially named by the Duchess of Cambridge, the 141,000 gross tonne Royal Princess will return to Southampton and will offer Britain Isles cruise itinerates. The construction of Princess Cruises’ latest ship has commenced, following a steel cutting ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. The new cruise ship will be a sister ship to Royal Princess, Regal Princess and the soon to launch, Majestic Princess. The new Royal-class cruise ship is due to launch in 2019. “Today’s steel cutting of Hull 6268 signals the continuation of a 16 year partnership that has delivered some of the most spectacular and innovative cruise ships at sea for Princess Cruises,” said Keith Taylor, Princess Cruises executive vice president of fleet operations. “We are delighted with the longevity of our partnership with Fincantieri and know that this next ship will follow on the successful design platform demonstrated with her sister ships.”
Princess Cruises’ 141,000 gross tonne Royal Princess has become the first ship in the fleet to set sail with the cruise lines striking new ‘seawitch’ design on the bow of the ship.
Royal Princess underwent a refurbishment in dry dock in Palermo. Amongst the work carried out on board was the addition of a midship passenger stairwell. Princess Cruises has revealed several new features aboard its brand new cruise ship, Majestic Princess which is scheduled to debut in April 2017.
The new ship is a sister ship to Royal Princess and Regal Princess, and will offer many of the same iconic features such as the Piazza atrium and the glass floored SeaWalk. The new ship which is destining for China will however boast some new unique features not found on her sister ships. Princess Cruises’ 112,900 gross tonne Caribbean Princess lost power this morning in the Irish Sea whilst on route to Dublin.
The ship was reportedly left without engine power for around 9 hours, 25 nautical miles southeast of Dublin, where it was due to dock at 11:30. |
