MSC Cruises’ newest World Class flagship, MSC World Asia, has returned to open waters as she begins her second and expected final sea-trial campaign ahead of her highly anticipated debut later this year.
The 205,700-gross-ton cruise ship departed Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, on September 9, marking another major milestone in the construction and commissioning of MSC Cruises’ newest flagship. The ship is expected to return to Saint-Nazaire later this week, where final work will continue ahead of her scheduled delivery.
Sea trials are a crucial part of the shipbuilding process, allowing the shipyard and cruise line to test the vessel's systems and performance in real-world conditions.
MSC World Asia previously completed her first sea trials in July, when she spent several days operating off the French Atlantic coast. During that campaign, teams tested areas including propulsion, manoeuvrability, navigation, fuel consumption and safety systems. The second campaign represents another important step toward completing the vessel. Once she returns to Saint-Nazaire, engineers will be able to analyse the latest test results and carry out any remaining adjustments before the ship moves into the final stages of preparation.
MSC World Asia is the third ship in MSC Cruises’ World Class series, following MSC World Europa and MSC World America.
At 333 metres long, the ship is one of the largest vessels ever constructed for MSC Cruises. She is powered by LNG and has been designed with seven distinct onboard districts, offering guests a wide range of accommodation, dining, entertainment and leisure experiences. The ship will also introduce a number of features specifically designed for World Asia, including new experiences in the World Promenade, a new Pan-Asian restaurant and what MSC Cruises describes as the longest dry slide at sea. More than 40 bars, restaurants and cafés will also be available across the ship. Following her delivery, MSC World Asia is scheduled to enter commercial service in December 2026, with her first guests expected to board in Barcelona on December 4. Her inaugural season will see the ship operate seven-night Mediterranean cruises, visiting destinations including Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia for Rome, Messina and Valletta. MSC Cruises has also announced that the ship will be officially named in Le Havre, France, on November 28, 2026, just days before her first passenger sailing.
