Norwegian Sky Bids Farewell to Norwegian Cruise Line After 27 Years

8/9/2026

Norwegian Sky has reached the end of her long career with Norwegian Cruise Line, bringing almost three decades of service with the cruise line to a close as the ship prepares for a new chapter with India-based Cordelia Cruises.

The 77,000-gross-ton ship, which entered service in 1999, has been a familiar sight in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet for more than 25 years. During her time with NCL, Norwegian Sky carried an estimated 2.5 million passengers and operated cruises across a wide range of destinations, including the Caribbean and Europe.

Her departure marks an important moment for Norwegian Cruise Line as the company continues to modernise its fleet and introduce newer ships. Norwegian Sky is one of the oldest vessels in the NCL fleet and will now leave the brand as part of a wider agreement that will also see Norwegian Sun eventually move to Cordelia Cruises.

The transfer to Cordelia Cruises was announced as part of an agreement between the two companies, with Norwegian Sky set to become part of Cordelia's growing fleet. The ship is expected to be renamed Cordelia Sky when she begins her new career.

The move will see the veteran cruise ship enter a very different market from the one she has served with NCL. Cordelia Cruises has been expanding its presence in India, and the addition of Norwegian Sky will provide the company with a much larger vessel capable of carrying around 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

The ship's final NCL programme had originally been expected to include a longer repositioning voyage towards the Middle East. However, ongoing security concerns in the region resulted in changes to the itinerary, with the planned final sailing eventually being cancelled. Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that affected passengers would receive refunds and additional compensation.
Despite the unusual ending to her NCL career, Norwegian Sky's departure does not mean the end of the ship. Instead, she is preparing for a new life under the Cordelia Cruises brand, where she is expected to be introduced as Cordelia Sky.

For Norwegian Cruise Line passengers who have sailed aboard the ship over the years, her departure will mark the end of an era. Norwegian Sky has remained one of the smaller ships in the modern NCL fleet, offering a more traditional cruise experience compared with the much larger vessels that have joined the company in recent years.

Cordelia Cruises, meanwhile, will gain a ship with decades of experience behind her as it continues to develop its cruise operations. The company is also scheduled to add Norwegian Sun to its fleet in 2027, with that ship expected to become Cordelia Sun.

Norwegian Sky may be leaving Norwegian Cruise Line, but her cruising career is far from over. After nearly 30 years under the NCL flag, the ship is preparing to take on a new name, a new operator and a new market as she begins the next chapter of her story as Cordelia Sky.
