The parents company of many of the world’s leading cruise lines, Carnival Corporation, the shipbuilder Fincantieri and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to build two new cruise ships, specifically for the Chinese cruise market.
A first for the cruise industry, the new cruise ships will not only be designed for the Chinese cruise market, but will also be constructed in China too. Carnival Corporation also have an option to construct an additional four cruise ships.
Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation, said: “We are proud to be able to order the first China-built cruise ships and play a leadership role in developing cruise shipbuilding capabilities for the first time in China, which represents another important milestone in building a sustainable and prosperous cruise industry, and demonstrates our commitment to helping China become a leading cruise market as part of its five-year economic development plan.”
The new build cruise ships will be constructed at Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao shipyard. The first ship is expected to launch in 2023.
