Several cruise ships were delayed departing from Port Everglades and Port Miami on 06 January 2017, following a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport which left five dead and several others injured. The incident occurred during the start of a typically busy weekend and during peak cruise season. The lone gunman reportedly opened fire at Terminal 2 at the airport in a crowded baggage claim area. Port Everglades was briefly closed to all traffic, whilst Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was closed to flights inward and outward bound. Some flights were also cancelled on the morning of 07 January 2016, possibly affecting cruise passengers. During the incident flights were rerouted to other nearby airports.
The Caribbean Princess and Nieuw Amsterdam which were docked at Port Everglades both departed late. Six other cruise ships are due to berth at Port Everglades on 07 January 2017, Carnival Conquest, Freedom of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Eurodam, Costa Deliziosa and Coral Princess. Security was also heightened at Miami International airport, whilst the departure of Norwegian Sky from Port Miami was delayed. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Victory sailed from Miami on time but the cruise line is expected to be providing hotel rooms for the few passengers who were delayed by the closure of the airport.
