MSC Cruises has taken delivery of its largest cruise ship to date. The brand new 167,600 gross tonne MSC Meraviglia was handed over to MSC Cruises in Saint-Nazaire from the shipyard, STX France.
The delivery ceremony was attended by the French President, Emmanuel Macron. The new ship, which has a passenger capacity of 5,714, received its official pennant and French flag, as well as a blessing, before being delivered to MSC Cruises.
MSC Meraviglia is the first of eleven new-build cruise ships which will join the MSC Cruises fleet over the next ten years. At the delivery ceremony MSC Cruises revealed that it would be investing € 4.5 billion into the STX shipyard in France.
The brand new cruise ship will depart the shipyard and make its way to Le Havre in France, where it will be officially christened on 03 June 2017. The ship will depart on its maiden voyage on 05 June, calling at Lisbon, Barcelona, Marseille and Genoa.
MSC Meraviglia will offer cruises around the Mediterranean until 2019, before repositioning to Miami where it will offer cruises around the Caribbean.
