P&O Cruises have announced the name of its newest and largest ship yet which is due to launch in 2020. The new ship will be named Iona.
The name was announced live on the cruise line’s Facebook page shortly after 16:00 GMT on 24 May 2018.
The announcement was as a result of a competition ran last year, when the cruise line invited members of the public to suggest a suitable name for the ship. Over 30,000 submissions were received and a panel of experts made the final decision.
Iona will cost approximately £710 million to build. The 183,900 gross tonne new ship will accommodate 5,200 passengers and will be the largest cruise ship dedicated for the British cruise market.
Features on board will includes over 15 places to eat, including 8 speciality restaurants, more than 10 places to enjoy a drink and take in sea views, 18 whirlpools, 4 swimming pools (three outside and one inside) and plenty of entertainment venues from the theatre to venues for adults only.
P&O Cruises has already ordered a sister ship, which is set to be delivered in 2022. Both ships are being constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.
Cruises on board Iona are expected to go on sale in September 2018.
