Princess Cruises has been fined $40 million after the cruise line pleaded guilty to several charges of polluting the sea and trying to cover it up.
The cruise line which is owned by parent company Carnival Corporation is being charged for illegally dumping oil contaminated waste from the Caribbean Princess.
The cruise ship has apparently been making illegal discharges since 2005, using a so-call ‘magic pipe’ to bypass pollution-prevention equipment on board.
The U.S. investigators started to probe the ship’s actions after a whistle-blower engineer reported illegal dumping off the coast of the United Kingdom in August 2013. Two other senior engineers then ordered it to be covered up and called upon subordinates to lie and sough to remove the pipe.
"This is a company that knew better and should have done better," Assistant Attorney General John Cruden said in the statement. "Hopefully the outcome of this case has the potential not just to chart a new course for this company but for other companies as well.”
