Silversea Cruises has completed one of the biggest endeavours ever taken on a luxury cruise ship. The ultra-luxury cruise lines’ Silver Spirit was cut in two at the Fincantieri shipyard in Palermo and extended by 15 metres (49 feet).
The lengthened ship left the shipyard on 03 May 2018 having spent 53 days in dry-dock at the Italian shipyard. Around 1,000 highly skills shipyard workers and contractors worked on the project.
The lengthening project and refurbishment of the Silver Spirit aimed to bring the ship in line with the cruise line’s newest vessel, Silver Muse which was delivered to Silversea Cruises in April 2017.
The improved ultra-luxury cruise ship now features an enlarged pool deck, extended restaurant and new Arts Café and an enhanced fitness centre. A stern thruster was also added to the ship to improve its manoeuvrability. Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Silversea’s Chairman, said: “I appreciate the complexity of this feat of engineering. As such, I am extremely proud of the amazing job my team and Fincantieri have done. Our beloved Silver Spirit resumes service in a condition that is even more beautiful than before.”
