Viking Ocean Cruises has taken delivery of its latest new build cruise ship, Viking Sky at a delivery ceremony at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy. Viking Sky is the third new build cruise ship to be delivered to Viking Ocean Cruises, joining Viking Star, which launched in 2015 and Viking Sea, which launched in 2016. A further three new cruise ships are due to join the Viking Ocean Cruises fleet. Viking Sun is scheduled to launch in November 2017, followed by Viking Spirit in April 2018 and Viking Song in 2020.
Viking Sky will depart on her maiden voyage on 25 February 2017 from Civitavecchia and will cruise the Mediterranean. The ship will cruise the Mediterranean throughout spring, before it is officially christened in Tromsø, Norway on the 22 June 2017, under Norway’s ‘midnight sun’. Following the official christening of the ship, Viking Sky will then offer cruise itineraries to Scandinavia and the Baltic, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean in September, where it will cruise America and the Caribbean. Torstein Hagen, Chairman, Viking Cruises, said: “In the past two years, we have been encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response our first two ocean ships have generated among our guests and travel industry partners. Today we mark an important milestone in welcoming the third ship to our fleet. By the end of 2017 – our 20th year in business – we will also welcome our fourth ship, doubling our fleet in less than a year. With our fast-growing fleet and innovative design, we look forward to introducing even more experienced travellers to The Viking Way of destination-focused itineraries in the years to come.”
