Tomline House at the Port of Felixstowe
Late last week Dream Designs Colchester contacted the Port of Felixstowe, to request a copy of their new Port of Felixstowe Journal 2011. We also asked for any back dated issues, which might also possibly be available.

Today, Monday 28th February 2011, Dream Designs Colchester visited Tomline House at the Port of Felixstowe to collect the journals, which had been gathered. We were kindly given a section of journals from the Port of Felixstowe, dating back to 2004.

Whilst in Tomline House at the Port of Felixstowe, Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, along with his parents Diane and Brian Cotterill, took the opportunity to view the model in reception of the Haven Gateway, including the new Felixstowe South Reconfiguration and Bathside Bay, developments.

After visiting Tomline House at the Port of Felixstowe, Harry and his parents visited the viewing point at Felixstowe, which is very popular with shipspotters. Whilst at the viewing point, Harry and his parents viewed the new giant ship-to-shore gantry cranes at the newly constructed berths 8 & 9.

Commemorative Cunard 150th Anniversary China Mug
Earlier today whilst Harry was at college, he received a gift from an old school friend, who’s father was Harry’s tutor at secondary school. Mr Gary Hart, was interviewed on BBC Look East, when Harry appeared on the news show in May 2009. Mr Hart had kindly brought a china mug, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Cunard, orginally from Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, said:

"It was a lovely surprise to receive the commemorative Cunard mug from my secondary school tutor, Mr Hart. Thank you very much indeed!"

Giant CSCL Star at Port of Felixstowe

CSCL Star, berthed alongside berths 8 & 9 at the Port of Felixstowe
On Monday 21st February 2011, Dream Designs Colchester visited Shotley Gate in Suffolk, across the river from the Port of Felixstowe, to take the opportunity to view the new CSCL Star.

The new 366 metre long ship arrived at the Port of Felixstowe on Friday 18th February 2011 at around 23:30. The giant ship berthed alongside the newly build berths 8 & 9, during her maiden voyage from Asia. A limited number of discharge moves were performed before the vessel was later moved to the Port of Felixstowe’s Trinity Terminal to continue cargo operations.

The CSCL Star is the first of five new ultra-large container ships joining the CSCL fleet in 2011. CSCL Venus, will be delivered in April, CSCL Jupiter in July, CSCL Mars in September, CSCL Mercury in November and CSCL Neptune in December. A further 3 vessels will be delivered in 2012.
David Gledhill, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) Limited, which owns of the Port of Felixstowe, commented:

" It is very exciting to be moving into the testing phase of this major development. There is an increasing trend towards ultra-large container vessels on many services operating between the Far East and Europe and it is essential the UK has the right facilities to accommodate these ships. Berths 8&9 will give us that capability and, allied to the unrivalled distribution options available from Felixstowe, will consolidate our position as the UK’s number one port."

He added:

" There is a lot of equipment to be tested and we need to be sure that all the new systems are resilient before the terminal is formally opened. It is, however, great to see the first mega-vessel alongside the only UK terminal that can handle it fully laden."
With the capacity to carry some 14,100 TEU, the CSCL Star is one of the world’s largest container ships and able to handle a significantly greater number of containers than any other ship currently in the CSCL fleet. The vessel has an overall length of 366 metres and a width of 51.2 metres, or 20 rows of containers across her deck. She has a gross tonnage of 150,853 and a draught of 14.5 metres when fully loaded with containers.

She was built by Samsung Heavy Industries and was delivered in January 2011. The CSCL Star will be deployed on the AEX1 Service, with a rotation sailing to, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Port of Felixstowe, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, said:

"It was fantastic to see the new CSCL Star arrive at the Port of Felixstowe late Friday night. It was even more exciting to see her berth alongside the newly built berths 8 & 9."

Today, Monday 21st February 2011, Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, visited Shotley Gate, along with his parents to view the new CSCL Star, which had been transferred to the Port of Felixstowe’s Trinity Terminal.
Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, added:

" Seeing the CSCL Star alongside Trinity Terminal this morning was quite a impressive sight! She is truly a colossal ship."

Launching of the new 14,100 TEU CSCL Star
On Friday 18th February 2011, the new CSCL Star is due to make her maiden call at the Port of Felixstowe. The latest addition to the China Shipping Container Line fleet was recently launched at a maiden voyage ceremony held at Shanghai Yangshan Port.

CSCL Star has the capacity to carry some 14,100 TEU, which makes her the largest ship China Shipping Container Line have ever operated. She has an overall length of 366.069 metres and a beam of 51.2 metres.

The ship will call at various ports including Ningbo in Zhejiang province, Yantian in Guangdong province, Felixstowe, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Hong Kong.

China Shipping Container Line has ordered eight such ships, with the CSCL Star being the first. The Korean shipyard where she was built will deliver five this year and two early next year.

CSCL Star is due to berth alongside the newly constructed berths 8 & 9 at the Port of Felixstowe. It is expected that the top most layer of container will be unloaded, the ship will then later be manoeuvred over to Trinity Terminal, where the remainder of her container operations will be completed.

Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, said:

"I was so pleased to be informed that the CSCL Star will be berthing at the Port of Felixstowe later this week. It will be wonderful for the Port of Felixstowe to put the new berths 8 & 9 to the test."

He added:

Emma Maersk at sea
Later this year in April, Dream Designs Colchester is due to visit their largest ship yet, when they board the colossal Emma Maersk, the largest container ship in the world.

Dream Designs Colchester contacted the Port of Felixstowe, the United Kingdom’s busiest container port, last month to request permission to visit the Emma Maersk. The Port of Felixstowe kindly passed our request on to Maersk Line directly. Maersk Line have since agreed to welcome us aboard Emma Maersk on Sunday 17th April 2011.

Danny Wright, Operations Manager, Felixstowe Operations, Maersk Line UK & Ireland, said: “I'm glad to see your attention has been grabbed by our own vessels calling in to Felixstowe, and I have to say that your drawings are very impressive and will surely be appreciated by the Captain and the crew.”

Emma Maersk has an overall length of 397.7 metres and a beam of 56 metres, with the capacity to carry some 11,000 TEU. (Twenty-foot equivalent unit)

Emma Maersk was launched in 2006 and made her maiden call at the Port of Felixstowe in November 2006. The vessel received an enormous level of interest, with thousand of onlookers watching as she arrived for the first time.

The maiden call of the Emma Maersk at the Port of Felixstowe played a significant part in Harry Cotterill’s interest and passion for ships. When he was younger he used to visit Harwich or Felixstowe, almost every weekend to watch the various container ships arrive and depart their berths.

Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, said: “Seeing the Emma Maersk arrive at the Port of Felixstowe for the first time in 2006 was an incredible moment for me. The sheer number of people which turned out to see her arrive was breathtaking, as was the size of the vessel herself. I had never seen anything quite like it.”

Whilst on board the Emma Maersk, Dream Designs Colchester will have the opportunity to meet with the Captain, to present the drawing of the ship which was especially assigned in late December 2010.

Harry Cotterill, President & Managing Director, Dream Designs Colchester, added: “We are delighted that Maersk Line have so kindly agreed to welcome us aboard Emma Maersk, when she berths at the Port of Felixstowe again later this year in April. It will certainly be a different experience for us, as we have never visited a container vessel before. We are all very much looking forward to the visit and meeting the Captain and crew.”

Port of Dover's Cruise Terminal 2
Earlier this week, Dream Designs Colchester contacted The Cruise Portfolio, who are the UK representatives for Crystal Cruises, as well as a number of other world famous cruise lines.

We wanted to contact them to take the opportunity to discuss with their staff the future of our drawing of Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity, which we especially assigned in December 2010.

Crystal Serenity is due to visit the Port of Dover later this year in early August.

The Cruise Portfolio have so very kindly agreed to welcome us aboard the Crystal Serenity in August, to join them along with a group of UK Travel Agents and potential guests, to tour the luxurious six star vessel.

At present, The Cruise Portfolio are unable to guarantee that we will be able to meet with the Captain of Crystal Serenity, to present our drawing of the vessel, during the visit to the ship. However, The Cruise Portfolio have informed us that they are planning to contact Crystal Cruises’ Head Office in Los Angeles, to see if a possible meeting can be arranged during the visit.
